Form Training: Infrared Sauna

What is it and why you should be using it.

Here at FORM we’ve go heaps of great equipment and amenities on offer.

Undoubtedly one of the coolest things we have on offer is our Infrared Sauna.

For many members it’s something they’ve always wanted to try-and you definitely should.

So, what exactly is an infrared sauna?

It’s a sauna that uses light to generate heat.

Unlike traditional saunas which typically warm the air around you to warm your body, these saunas use light to warm your body directly.

For many, the appeal of a sauna is the ability to cause reactions similar to that of moderate exercise and increased heart rate.

Infrared saunas achieve this at a lower temperature making it more accessible to those who could usually not withstand the heat of a normal sauna.

There are also multiple benefits to using an infrared sauna. These are some of our favourites:

Increased metabolism

The use of a sauna imparts a similar boost to the cardiovascular system as running. Your body is hard at work in the sauna producing sweat from the gentle infrared heat, your blood gets pumped and body gets to work burning calories.

Muscle Pain Relief

Increased blood circulation gets rid of metabolic waste and delivers oxygen to muscle to aid in recovery.  Your muscles relax when the tissue is warm, the heat from infrared saunas helps relieve muscle tension and soft tissue injuries.

Immune System Boost

As the infrared sauna raises your core body temperature an artificial fever is induced. Fever is the body’s natural mechanism to strengthen the immune system. You will also aid in ridding your body of toxins via sweating therefore increasing overall health and disease resistance.

Detoxification

One of the main benefits of infrared sauna is the ability to rid the body of toxins via sweat. As the sauna induces sweating it is one of the best ways to cleanse the body.

Stress & Fatigue reduction

Sitting in the sauna is a great way to relax and unwind. Taking time out of your day to relax and focus on yourself is a great stress relief and the infrared sauna is a simple way to do so while getting multiple benefits at the same time. Infrared saunas have been shown to put your body into it’s ‘rest or digest’ mode and allowing your body to heal.

We’re sure you’ve also got a few questions and we’ve already got the answers:

When can I use the Infrared Sauna at FORM Training?

Our sauna is available for use during staffed hours, between 7am-7pm. The sauna will not operate outside of these times so please make sure to come during these times.

What should I wear in the sauna?

Loose clothing is suggested for your session, your workout clothes are perfectly good to use too.

How can I prepare for a sauna session?

Make sure you hydrate well before your session. The sauna will make you sweat and therefore dehydrate you. Drinking plenty of water before and after your session will make a huge difference.

How can I make the most out of my session?

Before you use the sauna think of what the main benefit you want to get from the sauna is. For example, if you have sleep issues you may want to come later to help you unwind before bed. Or even using the sauna in the morning to start your day off right. Using it after a workout is also a great way to combat muscle soreness and to detox the body.

How many times a week should I use the sauna?

A minimum of 1 a week is recommended but as you work up your tolerance of the heat research shows anywhere between 2-4 sessions a week are beneficial. This could be a mix of short post workout sessions or dedicated sauna only sessions in which you don’t workout but simply use the sauna for 30-45 mins. Session lengths are up to you, as your get started a 15-20 min session might be a good way to go.

We hope this helps you feel more confident to use the amazing sauna we have in the studio.
